Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has auctioned off a 10-storey building under construction illegally near the Ramchandrapur Canal in Bosila, Ward No. 33 of Mohammadpur, for Tk60,000.

The DNCC's Public Relations Officer Maqbool Hossain disclosed the information on Sunday

He said: “On March 13, Regional (Zone-5) Officer and Executive Magistrate Mutakabbir Ahmed conducted an open auction of the building. Dr Mohammad Mahe Alam, the chief property officer of DNCC, was also present at the time.”

The highest bidder in the auction was instructed to complete the demolition of the under-construction building within 10 days from March 13 and clear the remaining materials. Demolition work has been underway since March 14.

Mutakabbir Ahmed said: “According to the map, approximately 80% of the 10-storey building under construction encroached upon the Ramchandrapur Canal.”

He added: “On February 23, the illegally constructed building was demolished in the presence of Mayor Md Atiqul Islam. After reviewing the map and documents, the building owner acknowledged that 80% of the building encroached upon the canal boundary. Initially, the owner requested seven days to dismantle the building but failed to comply within the specified time frame. Subsequently, following discussions with the owner, the building was auctioned off in accordance with the regulations.”

On February 23, DNCC initiated the eviction process to clear illegal encroachments and debris from the Ramchandrapur Canal.
