The BNP standing committee on Tuesday said that the ruling Awami League government lacks the capacity to prevent bloodshed and ensure security at the border.
The party contends that during the regimes of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, their strong leadership prevented tension on the border with Myanmar's ruling class at the time.
This statement signed by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, senior joint secretary general of the party, was issued on Tuesday through a press release, following a decision made by the National Standing Committee of BNP.
The press release also suggests that the current government is incapable of taking effective measures and is hesitant to protest against the unjust bloodshed at the border.
Condemning Bangladesh's involvement in the violent clashes along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, the statement highlights a week-long clash between the military junta's armed forces and separatists inside Myanmar at the Naikhongchhari border of Bandarban and Tumbru border, characterizing it as a dire situation.
"The national standing committee of BNP expresses deep concern that instead of protesting strongly and dealing with the situation quickly through effective political activities in this very dangerous situation for the country, they are taking the position of showing patience," the statement added.
It further said: "Government without public support has put border security and freedom and sovereignty under threat. Law Minister Anisul Haque said in the ‘dummy parliament’ on Monday that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar without taking steps to protect the country's borders and local people. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered Bangladesh Armed Forces and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to exercise patience.”
The statement said: "The current Awami League government is not able to take effective steps because it is unelected and unethical. Today, when our freedom and sovereignty is threatened by other countries, when freedom is vulnerable, Sheikh Hasina's dummy government is unable to do anything. This is because they are forcing people to serve others by holding them hostage at gunpoint.”
In the statement, the BNP claimed: "The independence and sovereignty of the state may face a big risk because the current divisive government is making empty statements like in the past, leaving the border unprotected."
