A Joypurhat court Monday (February 19) sentenced five people to death for killing a school boy at Panchbibi upazila in the district in 2010.
At the same time, the court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.
The death row convicts are - Amina Begum, 49, her son Rafiul, 32, residents of Dargapara village under Panchbibi upazila, Mozaffar Hossain, 49, Sahida Begum, 48, and Golam Rabbani, 34, of Koktara village of the same upazila.
Joypurhat Additional Sessions 1st Court Judge Nurul Islam passed the order this afternoon.
Nripendranath Mondal, public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.
Among the convicts, Amina Begum is absconding.
According to case statement, on March 25, 2010 at 9 am, farmer Abu Taher, a resident of Dargapara village of the upazila, was taking straw from the haystack in front of his house. At that time, due to previous enmity, the convicts started beating him. Meanwhile, when Abu Taher's son Abu Hossain came forward to save his father, they also beat Abu Hossain. When he was seriously injured, the convicts fled.
Local people rescued Abu Hossain in critical condiction and first admitted to Panchbibi Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura. He later died in a hospital in Dhaka while undergoing treatment there.
The victim's father Abu Taher filed a case against nine people with Panchbibi Police Station on April 4 of that year.
The court gave this verdict on Monday after taking the depositions of 13 witnesses.
Four accused in this case were acquitted as the charges were not proved against them.
