The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday upheld a High Court verdict, convicting BNP leader Habibur Rahman Habib for contempt of court and sentencing him to five months imprisonment.
A three-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order, scrapping a leave to appeal petition filed by the BNP leader.
The High Court on November 22 pronounced its judgment, sentencing Habib to five-month jail and fined him Taka 2,000. Habib, who is now behind the bars, filed the leave to appeal plea and a plea for bail on February 8, 2024.
Senior advocate Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal moved the pleas for Habib, while Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed argued for the state.
