Separate road traffic accidents have claimed the lives of at least eight people, including three members of a family, amid a rush of Eid-ul-Fitr holidaymakers.

The dead are Lutfor Rahman, 30, his wife Shahnaz Parveen, 25, their 2-year-old son Mahit who was identified with a single name, Nasima Akter, 35, Jihad Mia, 25, Apel Mia, 25, Maruf Hossain, 18, and Abuhl Bashar, 55.

Mahit died on the spot when a Prantik Paribahan bus hit the Mahindra, a small passenger vehicle, in the Langrabazar area of Sadar Upazila on the Mymensingh-Tangail Highway, said Mohammad Main Uddin, chief of Kotwali Police Station.

Mahit’s 6-year-old brother Mujahid, who was also identified with a single name, was injured along with their parents Lutfor and Shahnaz.

They were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where Lutfor and Shanaz died.

The couple worked in a readymade garment factory in Bhaluka and the family took the bypass to avoid traffic jams on their way home to Sherpur to celebrate Eid.

The bus driver and his assistant fled the scene. “We’re trying to catch them. The bodies have been transferred to the family,” said Main Uddin.

Trishal Police Station chief Kamal Hossain said two passengers of an autorickshaw parked on Balipara Road in the Upazila died after a bus had hit the small vehicle.

A Mymensingh-bound bus smashed a pick-up van that was making a U-turn in the Darirampur area on the highway, Kamal said.

Another person was run over and killed by a bus on Dhobaura Road, said Tarakanda Police Station chief Wazed Ali.
