A passenger has died after a Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express train derailed on a section of the Joydebpur-Mymensingh railway line that was allegedly damaged by saboteurs in Gazipur.
Several others were injured in the incident, which occurred around 4 am on Wednesday, according to Hanif Ali, chief of the Joydebpur Railway Station.
The dead passenger has been identified as 35-year-old Aslam Hossain, a poultry trader from Mymensingh's Gafargaon. The train driver, Emdadul Huq, and his assistant, Sajib Mia, were among the injured.
Train operations on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route have been suspended in the wake of the incident.
Seven compartments, including the engine, went off the tracks soon after the train departed from Rajendrapur, according to Hanif.
Describing the incident as an act of "sabotage", Hanif said, "Criminals reportedly severed parts of the railway line, leading to the accident."
The exact number of people injured in the incident has yet to be determined.
A rescue team reached the spot around 8 am, according to Hanif.
