Seedbeds are being prepared by the farmers to produce healthy seedlings for Boro farming in the district this season.
69,725 hectares of land would be brought under Boro paddy cultivation this year with a production target of at least 300,000 tonnes of rice as said by the sources from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
The DAE has set a target to prepare seedbed on 3,420 hectares of land to produce Boro paddy seedlings. Now, the farmers are passing a busy time preparing the seedbed on low lands.
DAE sources said, 3,150 hectares land will be cultivated of high yielding (Ufshi) varieties and 270 hectares land will be cultivated of hybrid varieties Boro paddy. Already 150 hectares of land have been completed.
The target for Boro cultivation on 69,725 hectares of land in the district includes 62,990 hectares of high yielding (Ufshi) varieties and 6,735 hectares land of hybrid varieties, DAE said.
Last year, 69,600 hectares of land was cultivated for Boro paddy.
Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) has supplied improved varieties of seeds to the farmers and necessary fertilizers already have been allocated for this purpose.
Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) has taken extensive initiatives to distribute agricultural loans to Boro paddy cultivation and other winter crops for the farmers, Deputy Director of DAE Rahela Parveen said.
She also said necessary training and materials are being provided to farmers to make Boro cultivation successful in the district.
