Bumper tomato yields bring smile for Cumilla farmers

Farmers of the district are happy for bumper production of tomato and fair prices of the popular winter crop this season.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), the produced tomatoes have made a significant contribution to meeting the demand of Narayanganj, Feni, Noakhali and Chattogram including the capital Dhaka.

This year, over 1,000 hectares of land have been cultivated tomato, Deputy Director of DAE Ayub Mahmud Baske said.

He said the tomatoes produced in the low land of the district area will reach the market in the last week of February. At present, the market for tomatoes produced in the high land of the district has become very popular.

Tomatoes produced in Chandina, Barura, Daudkandi, Homna, Burichang, and Debidwar are being sold in one of the country's vegetable markets in the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Nimsar Bazar.

Beside, tomatoes produced in Panchthubi, Amratali, Jagannathpur, Durgapur Union of Cumilla Sadar and various unions of Sadar Dakshin upazila are sold in Rajganj Bazar and Chawkbazar of the city. Vegetable traders from other markets in the city buy tomatoes at wholesale rates from here.

At present, large, medium and small sized tomatoes are being sold at retail rates of Taka 35 to Taka 40 per kg. In the mid-December, the market price of tomatoes was Taka 60 to Taka 80 per kg, As a result the farmers are happy for get high price, Deputy Director of DAE Ayub Mahmud Baske said.
