A team of CID arrests BNP-backed general secretary candidate Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal from his chamber in Dhaka on Saturday evening, March 9, 2024.

A team of Criminal Investigative Department (CID) has arrested BNP-backed general secretary candidate Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal in connection with a clash that took place over the announcement of results of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election on Friday.

The CID arrested him from his chamber in Paltan of the capital on Saturday evening.

Later, he was handed over to Shahbagh police station and shown arrested in a case filed in connection with the clash.

Superintendent of Police (Media) Azad Rahman of CID headquarters confirmed the arrest.

Earlier, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested five lawyers in the case filed at Shahbagh Police Station over the clash during votes counting of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election early Friday.

The arrestees are SC lawyers Kazi Bashir Ahmed, Tushar, Tariqul, Suman and Barrister Osman Chowdhury. They were arrested from different parts of the capital on Friday night.

DB chief Harunor Rashid confirmed the matter on Saturday.

Assistant Attorney General Saifur Rahman Siddiqui filed with Shahbagh police station on Friday.

He accused 20 lawyers, including newly elected Secretary of SCBA Nahid Sultana Juthi and BNP-backed secretary candidate Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajol.

Another 30-40 unidentified people were also accused in the case.

On Friday, vote counting in the SCBA election was halted following the clash.

SCBA Chief Election Commissioner Senior Advocate Abul Khair said several lawyers were attacked in the SCBA polling centre and hence the vote counting was halted.

Meanwhile, independent candidate Nahid Sultana Juthi was elected as the secretary of SCBA.

It was known that most of the candidates and lawyers had requested the SCBA election commission to count the votes later in the day, rather than at night.

However, Nahida and her followers allegedly put pressure on the election commission to count the votes immediately and declare the results.
