AL vows to form National Commission for Minorities

Awami League (AL) has committed to forming the ‘National Commission for Minorities’ if it is elected in the next general elections to be held on January 7, 2024.

The AL came up with pledge in its election manifesto for 2024 general elections, announced by AL President Sheikh Hasina, at a city hotel today.

The initiative to protect the rights of every person in the light of the Constitution will be continued, the manifesto read.

During the tenure of the AL government, Jatiya Sangsad amended the Vested Property Act, and measures were taken to resolve the issues related to vested property. Obstacles to law enforcement will be removed.

To protect the interests of minorities, the ‘National Commission for Minorities’ will be formed, and the ‘Special Protection of Minorities Act’ will be enacted, according to the election manifesto. 

The AL will continue to take necessary steps to ensure the security of life and livelihood of religious minorities, small ethnic groups, and backward communities.

In addition, Hijras will be included in the mainstream of society, and their fundamental rights will be preserved, social justice will be ensured, education, housing, and quality of life will be improved, and social security will be ensured.

Cash assistance and housing programs free of cost for the Hijra community will be expanded nationwide, the AL vowed.
