Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday arrested 25 youths, over allegations of conducting criminal offences on a regular basis in the capital’s Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur areas.
The arrestees belonged to five youth gangs and carried out robberies, drug trafficking, and physical attacks on pedestrians in Beribadh, Adabor, Dhaka Uddan and Dhanmondi areas.
They were arrested during drives conducted on Saturday.
At least four of the arrested youth are aged 19.
In daytime, the youths worked as motor vehicle drivers, assistants at public transports, shop workers, construction workers, street vegetable vendors and vendors of old furniture. In the night, they removed their disguise to engage in criminal activities.
They have been implicated in various cases filed with different police stations, RAB officer Shihab Karim confirmed.
Juvenile delinquency has become a major problem throughout the country over the last couple of years. The young men have organised under different youth gangs to project power and threaten general people. Due to their young age, it is difficult to identify and take actions against them.
