Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been released from prison after spending eight years behind bars for conspiring in a plot to kill her mother.
The American woman had been incarcerated for her part in the death of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in a case that attracted national attention due to its unique framework.
But she walked free from the Chillicothe Correctional Center at 03:30 on Thursday after she was granted parole, having served the majority of her sentence.
Blanchard, who spent eight years in prison following the events that occurred in Springfield, Missouri, back in June 2015, has spoken at length about the incident and how her boyfriend at the time, Nick Godejohn, conspired to kill her mom.
Now 32, she has decided to revealed everything that happened, with a detailed explanation for what drove her to plan the killing of her own mother and whether she feels remorse for her death.
Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of murder in the second degree. It is claimed that for years that she had plotted revenge after Gypsy's mom subjected her to medical procedures that she never needed.
This point was argued in court and it is now widely believed that Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen by proxy, a rare form of abuse in which a guardian exaggerates or induces illness in a child for attention and sympathy.
At the time of Dee Dee's murder, Gypsy claims she was being abused physically and mentally, before being forced into yet another unnecessary surgery. She finally snapped, asking Godejohn to kill her mother and according to her, he agreed to carry out the slaying while she waited in the bathroom of the family home.
Godejohn, who received a life sentence for the murder of Dee Dee, says he would do it again to protect his former girlfriend. But Gypsy admits she "regrets" the events that led to her mother's death.
"Nobody will ever hear me say I'm glad she's dead or I'm proud of what I did. I regret it every single day," she told PEOPLE Magazine.
