Golam Mohammad Idu, former president of the country's leading cultural organization Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, was laid to eternal rest at Azimpur Graveyard in the city this afternoon following his funeral rituals.
The body of Idu, who breathed his last on Friday afternoon at the age of 87, was taken to Udichi Shilpigoshthi premises at 1.30pm today where artists of Udichi's central Sangsad, Dhaka City Sangsad, Feni District Sangsad, Manikganj District Sangsad, Cumilla District Sangsad and different units of the organization in the capital paid their tributes to him.
Later, his body was taken to Central Shaheed Minar at 2.30pm under the arrangement of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote while leaders and activists of different political, social and cultural organizations paid their tribute to Idu, who served as a journalist at a national daily.
Leaders and artists of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, Ganasangeet Samannay Parishad, Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parishad, Bangladesh Abritti Samannay Parishad, Rishiz Shilpigoshthi, Satyen Sen Shilpigosthi, Chhayanaut, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jubo Union, Chhatra Union, Tannery Sramik Trade Union, National Awami Party, Ganatantri Party, Garments Sramik Trade Union Centre, Khetmujur Samity, Pragati Lekhak Sangha, Sector Commanders Forum, Trustee Board of Liberation War Museum, Bangladesh College Bishwabidyaloy Shikkhak Samity, Shikkha Sangskriti Andolon, Karak Natya Sampraday and Samaj Chinta Forum were among who paid homage to Idu on the Shaheed Minar premises.
Recalling Idu's contributions to the country's cultural arena, Udichi Shilpigoshthi Central Sangsad President Professor Badiur Rahman said Udichi will march forward upholding the ideals and spirit of Idu.
Sammilito Sangskritik Jote President Golam Quddus said death of Idu caused an irreparable loss to the country's cultural arena.
One of the founders of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi Golam Mohammad Idu was suffering from old-age complications for long. He was taken to Health and Hope Hospital in the capital's Panthopath area on December 17 where he breathed his last on Friday.
Idu was elected as executive member of the first convening committee of Udichi as the organization was founded on October 29, 1968.
He also served as the president of Udichi Shilpigosthi between 2008 and 2012.
Idu actively participated in all democratic movements of the nation including anti-British movement, great Liberation War and anti-autocratic movement and other progressive movements.
He also had to serve jail term for long.
